MP Luke Murphy Flexes £2 Bus Cap, But The Maths Isn't Mathing for Tesco Shoppers
Basingstoke MP Luke Murphy has officially entered the Stagecoach chat, praising the new national fare cap that will keep bus journeys at a flat £2 across England from January to December 2027.
My man said that this move delivers on the Prime Minister's promise to make the cost of living "run through the veins of this Government". He says capping fares at £2 will make journeys across Basingstoke more affordable and give our community and that "space to breathe".
Pause. Let's do some quick Basingwoke mathematicians.
Two pounds. I think that is exactly two pound coins as of writing this article.
While Lukey, who bagged a role as a parliamentary private secretary to the Department for Transport back in March 2026, is out here acting like he just dropped the ultimate 'W', he is completely ignoring the real crisis on the streets and that. If we spend our last two £1 coins on the Stagecoach to Chineham, how is we supposed to unlock the Tesco trolleys?
It gets worse. Murphy man also praised the plan to give children aged five to 15 free bus travel throughout August on participating local services. So, let me get this straight: the youths get to ride for free like VIPs, while the adults are forced to hand over the exact metal currency needed to secure a Meal Deal? Mans has got to eat too.
"Lower fares will help people get to where they need to," said Prime Minister Andy Burnham, adding that it will give families "breathing space".
Yeah, breathing space to walk home carrying eight bags for life which cost more than the bus fare each, 'cos we had to sacrifice our trolley money to the bussy driver. Absolute L Rizzy from the Department for Transport.
